Honey Cooper is 10 years old, technically a fourth-grader, and already completing college coursework. Let that sink in.
The California student recently finished her first class at San Bernardino Valley College — Art 120, a two-dimensional design course designed for students pursuing actual art careers. Not a junior program. Not a special “kids” version. The real thing, alongside real college students.
Honey is a GATE-identified scholar — that’s the Gifted and Talented Education program for academically advanced students in California — and her abilities have been evident for years. Her mother Mia Cooper explained why they embraced the challenge: “Even though they may be younger, they still always have to be challenged. And this is a new way for them to be challenged.”
At a time when we need more examples of young Black excellence in education and the arts, Honey Cooper is out here quietly building the blueprint, one course at a time. She’s not waiting for the world to catch up. Watch this kid. 🙌
