Progressive soul singer Devon Gilfillian has announced his third album, Time Will Tell, will arrive June 26 via Fantasy Records.
Executive produced by Neal H Pogue (OutKast, Steve Lacy, Tyler, the Creator), the 12-track album was co-produced by Gilfillian and Jonathan Smalt.
According to press materials, Time Will Tell finds “Gilfillian crafting a hybrid of the Philly soul he was raised on and the Nashville sounds he’s absorbed since moving there in 2013.” The album will be released digitally, as well as on vinyl and CD. All formats are available for preorder.
Along with his album announcement, Gilfillian has released the lead single “Hold On (Hourglass).”
Built on twangy Spaghetti Western guitar and urgent percussive kicks, the track finds him sprinting toward the dead-end of a fleeting romance. “Am I holding on just to let you go?” he asks in the chorus.
“‘Hold On’ is my psychedelic country western soul realization that I am holding on to a relationship that is no longer serving either of us. I imagined this song in Quentin Tarantino’s Django Unchained when I wrote it, so we went to the desert to bring that vision to life,” Gilfillian explained.
He continued, “In this age of AI, I wanted to make something raw, organic, with the cracks that expose the real sh*t. There’s pain in these songs, and it was hard to write some of them, but I’m glad I did, and I’m grateful for the love that made these songs happen. I’m excited for y’all to hear my version of Nashville Soul and come on this next journey with me.”
Time Will Tell is the follow-up to Gilfillian’s 2023 sophomore album, Love You Anyway. The LP included “All I Really Wanna Do,” a top 10 hit on Billboard’s Adult Alternative Airplay chart. He later teamed with producer Camper (Brandy, Jill Scott) for an alternate version, “All I Really Wanna Do (Sunset Mix).”
When asked what he hoped listeners would take away from Love You Anyway, Gilfillian told Rated R&B, “I would love [for] it to open people up to conversations — hard conversations, political conversations, religious conversations, all conversations that are uncomfortable. I also want them to dance and forget about the sh*t that’s going on in their life. If I can get those two things to happen, then I think I feel like I did a good job.”
This spring, Gilfillian will join guitarist Cory Wong on his Lost In The Wonder Tour as a special guest. The tour kicks off April 15 in Kansas City, Missouri, and Gilfillian will wrap his stint on May 1 in Dallas. Later in the summer, he will play at the Minnesota Yacht Club Festival and the Strawberry Jam Music Festival.
