Jayden Wallace Opens Up About Fatal Prank
Through his attorney, Wallace and his family shared a heartfelt statement with ABC News. In it, Wallace and his family described Hughes as a mentor and a positive influence in his life. “Along with the rest of our family, Jay expresses his deepest sorrow and sincerest apology to the Hughes family,” the statement read. “I pledge to live out the remainder of my life in a manner that honors the memory of Coach Hughes by exemplifying Christ. He will never be forgotten.” Wallace called Hughes someone who “meant the world” to him. He reportedly added that he and his family are still grappling with the “tremendous loss.”
What Really Happened That Night?
According to authorities, Wallace and four other students—also 18—went to Hughes’ house last Friday to roll toilet paper on his trees. The Hughes family told ABC News that Hughes, 40, “knew” about the prank and was excited to catch the students in the act. But the night turned tragic when Hughes tripped and fell into the roadway as the students attempted to flee in two vehicles. Wallace ran over Hughes while driving one of the cars. Although the teens tried to help, Hughes later died in a hospital.
Charges Filed, But Hughes’ Family Calls It A Tragedy
Wallace faces vehicular homicide charges, while the other students are also charged with criminal trespassing. Jason Hughes’ family has emphasized that the incident was a tragic accident and supports dropping the charges against the teens. District Attorney Lee Darragh is reportedly reviewing the case and said he will give “great deference” to the Hughes family’s wishes. Authorities released all five students on bond, and Wallace will appear in court on April 1.
