NFL legend Matt Snell has passed away at the age of 84. The New York Jets confirmed the news Tuesday, paying tribute to one of the foundational figures in franchise history.
Snell is best remembered for scoring the only touchdown in the Jets’ historic Super Bowl III victory over the Baltimore Colts in January 1969 — still one of the biggest upsets in Super Bowl history. He’d also claimed AFL Rookie of the Year honors back in 1964, cementing himself as a cornerstone of that championship run.
“Matt Snell will forever hold a special place in the history of the New York Jets,” said Jets Chairman Woody Johnson. “He was the embodiment of toughness, heart, and everything our franchise stands for.”
The Jets shared the news on X, writing: “We’re saddened to share Matt Snell, an integral member of our Super Bowl III championship team and Ring-of-Honor inductee, has passed away at age 84. Keeping the Snell family in our thoughts and prayers 💚”
No cause of death was shared by the franchise.
Rest in power, Matt Snell. Super Bowl champion. Forever a Jet. 💚
