If someone had told me a year ago that I’d become a Disney cast member by working for ESPN, my dream company, I would have thought they were lying. Even now, it still feels surreal, as though I’m Sleeping Beauty and haven’t woken up yet. The year I have spent as a Rhoden Fellow has opened doors I never imagined possible, providing me with invaluable experience and connections that have propelled me closer to my aspirations in sports journalism.
The fellowship, named after the legendary sports journalist, the late William C. Rhoden, is more than just an opportunity; it’s a transformative journey for young writers and aspiring media professionals, particularly those from underrepresented backgrounds. Coming from Norfolk State University, I’ve always had big dreams but limited resources. This fellowship has not only equipped me with the skills necessary for success but has also surrounded me with passionate individuals who share a love for storytelling and sports.
Throughout the fellowship, I’ve had the chance to work alongside seasoned professionals who have pushed me to embrace my voice and develop my unique narrative style. From covering major sporting events to learning the ins and outs of digital media, each experience has been a stepping stone toward my ultimate goal. The rigorous workshops and mentorship have challenged me, but they’ve also ignited a fire within me that I didn’t know was there.
As I reflect on this journey, I cannot help but feel grateful for every late night spent writing, every conversation with my mentors, and every moment of doubt that has led to powerful breakthroughs. The Rhoden Fellowship has turned my dreams into tangible goals, and now, I feel more prepared than ever to step into the world of sports media. My dream career is no longer a distant fantasy; it’s within reach, and I am ready to make my mark in this dynamic industry.
So, to anyone else out there chasing their dreams, remember that sometimes your path might twist and turn in unexpected ways, but every step is a part of your unique story. I’m just getting started, and I can’t wait to see where this journey takes me next.
