Na'Ziyah Harris: Her Killer Died Without Saying Where She Is

By Malik Carter, PowerVault Staff

In the early afternoon of January 9, 2024, 13-year-old Na'Ziyah Harris stepped off her school bus near Cornwall and Three Mile Drive, marking the last known moment she was seen alive. This Detroit east side area, often bustling with activity, turned into the starting point of an agonizing search. Na'Ziyah, a student at J. E. Clark Preparatory Academy, was reported missing by her grandmother the following morning. Despite extensive efforts, Na'Ziyah's body has never been recovered, a haunting void that adds to the family's grief. Her last moments remain shrouded in chilling uncertainty, driving a relentless quest for answers and justice.

According to reports from CBS Detroit and Local 4, the investigation quickly focused on Jarvis Butts, a man well-known to Na'Ziyah's family. Butts, a 43-year-old from Detroit, was familiar because he was the father of Na'Ziyah's cousins. He had a history of violence and was a registered sex offender with a 2005 assault conviction. Prosecutors accused him of beginning to sexually abuse Na'Ziyah in 2022, even sending explicit texts and photos. These allegations painted a grim picture of a man exploiting familial connections to commit heinous acts. His dark past was further complicated by pending charges involving other young victims.

On January 9, 2024, the same day Na'Ziyah Harris disappeared after getting off her school bus near Cornwall and Three Mile in Detroit, Jarvis Butts was scheduled to surrender for a gun charge. However, this court date was postponed to February, inadvertently allowing him the freedom to enact his malevolent plan. Prosecutors later revealed a disturbing timeline in which Na'Ziyah met Butts and was taken to Ypsilanti before they returned to Detroit. Butts checked into a local motel, a suspicious act that drew investigators' attention. Text messages were uncovered, revealing Butts's awareness of Na'Ziyah’s pregnancy. Shockingly, he had even searched online for abortion pills and disturbing methods, such as using red antifreeze. These chilling discoveries highlighted Butts's calculated and malicious intent.

Investigators diligently tracked Jarvis Butts to the Rouge River area near 7 Mile and Berg the day after Na'Ziyah Harris went missing. On January 10, 2024, police discovered a pink jumpsuit believed to belong to the 13-year-old girl, Na'Ziyah. The clothing was found inside out, showing significant damage that suggested a violent struggle had taken place near that desolate location. A U.S. Border Patrol officer later testified that the clothes appeared freshly damaged, reinforcing the theory that Na'Ziyah had been in that area recently. Although this critical discovery did not directly lead to finding her body, it solidified the grim suspicions surrounding Butts' involvement in her tragic murder. This finding provided a pivotal lead that deepened the investigation into the heartbreaking case.

Less than two weeks before the trial, on February 12, 2026, Jarvis Butts pleaded guilty to six separate charges, including second-degree murder. The plea agreement resulted in a sentence of 35 to 60 years for the murder charge, alongside five counts of criminal sexual conduct, each carrying a sentence of 10 to 15 years, to be served concurrently. Wayne County Prosecutor Kym Worthy sought insight into the location of Na'Ziyah's body as part of the plea. Though Butts didn’t disclose this in open court, a confidential source revealed he admitted to disposing of her body in the Rouge River near 7 Mile and Berg.

On March 12, 2026, Judge Nicholas Hathaway sentenced Butts, closing a legal chapter but not ending the sorrow felt by Na'Ziyah's family. His prison time, significant but somehow insufficient against the loss of a young life, shows the limitations of legal closure. Just two weeks later, on March 26, 2026, Butts was found dead at the Charles Egeler Reception and Guidance Center in Jackson, Michigan. His death is being investigated as a suicide, compounding the tragedy and leaving many unanswered questions. The Detroit Police Department stated, "Although the legal process ended with a conviction in court, our work is not done."

Butts' death leaves a void in justice.

The plea deal's structure in the Na'Ziyah Harris case raised significant questions about whether justice was fully served.

The plea deal's structure in the Na'Ziyah Harris case raised significant questions about whether justice was fully served. Na'Ziyah, just 13 years old, was tragically killed after stepping off her school bus on January 9, 2024, near Cornwall and Three Mile in Detroit. Her perpetrator, 43-year-old Jarvis Butts, who had been abusing her since 2022, pleaded guilty to second-degree murder in six cases on February 12, 2026. Judge Nicholas Hathaway sentenced him a month later, on March 12, 2026, to 35 to 60 years in prison. Yet, with no recovery of Na'Ziyah's body from the Rouge River, doubts about the plea deal's adequacy linger. Butts' subsequent death on March 26, 2026, at Charles Egeler in Jackson, under investigation as a suicide, erased any remaining hope for revelations. This outcome highlights broader patterns in the justice system, where expedience sometimes eclipses the pursuit of complete justice, leaving families without full closure.

The case against Jarvis Butts also explains how the system handles habitual offenders. Given his prior conviction for sexual assault in 2005, how did he slip through the cracks to endanger more children? The habitual fourth offender designation was no arbitrary label; it shows repeated systemic failures to intervene and protect potential victims. This tragedy reveals that existing measures to monitor and deter repeat offenders can fall short, drawing attention to the need for reforms that prioritize prevention and protection over delayed punitive measures. The system's weaknesses in this regard are glaringly evident.

Furthermore, this case tragically highlights the chronic under-resourcing of investigations into missing Black children, a persistent issue that remains overlooked in society. Thirteen-year-old Na'Ziyah Harris, who was last seen getting off her school bus on January 9, 2024, near Cornwall and Three Mile in Detroit, was killed by Jarvis Butts, the 43-year-old father of her cousins. Despite years of abuse since 2022, Na'Ziyah's story received limited media attention compared to cases involving white children. When Butts pleaded guilty on February 12, 2026, to second degree murder and was sentenced by Judge Nicholas Hathaway on March 12, 2026, to 35 to 60 years, the tragedy underscored how racial biases influence policing, media coverage, and justice. His death on March 26, 2026, at Charles Egeler in Jackson, investigated as a suicide, leaves a chilling reminder of the deeper injustices that need urgent societal reckoning.

Race, class, and systemic dynamics played a crucial role in this tragedy. Na'Ziyah's story isn't only about individual criminal acts but also about how institutional neglect exacerbates vulnerabilities. Black and economically disadvantaged communities frequently face an uphill battle in securing justice, their cases often lost to the margins. Within this context, missing Black children remain an underrepresented and under-prioritized group, compounding the grief of families seeking justice. Calls for equity in attention and resources are not new, but they are invigorated by each tragic story that emerges. This case highlights the chronic under-resourcing of missing Black children's cases.

For Na'Ziyah Harris's family, the search for her remains is a heart-wrenching journey that leaves an enduring void in their lives. Na'Ziyah, just 13 years old, was last seen after stepping off her school bus on January 9, 2024, near Cornwall and Three Mile in Detroit, only to be killed by Jarvis Butts, the 43-year-old father of her cousins. Despite his guilty plea to second-degree murder on February 12, 2026, and subsequent sentencing by Judge Nicholas Hathaway on March 12, 2026, to 35 to 60 years in prison, the recovery of her body from the Rouge River remains elusive. The Detroit Police Department remains committed to following leads, and the community continues their efforts to maintain visibility and apply pressure to solve this lingering mystery. Meanwhile, Na'Ziyah's family lives with the daily reality of loss, compounded by unanswered questions about her fate. Their resilience in the face of such tragedy stands as a powerful testament to enduring love and hope.
